Norfolk is flat, quiet and made for dogs: miles of sandy beach at Holkham and Wells, big skies over the Broads, and pinewoods to sniff through when the wind picks up. If your dog’s happiest with sand underfoot and space to run, this is arguably the best beach county in England.

Dog-friendly beaches in Norfolk

  • Holkham: one of the great beaches of England – vast at low tide, backed by pinewoods, and dog-friendly year-round on most stretches (watch for roped-off bird nesting areas in season)
  • Wells-next-the-Sea: famous beach huts, pinewoods and a long run of sand – a short zoned section in summer, plenty of space beyond it
  • Brancaster: huge, wild and rarely busy – check tides, as the walk out is long and the incoming tide cuts across
  • Winterton-on-Sea: dunes and space on the east coast – with important seal-season caveats below

Our UK dog-friendly beaches guide covers the seasonal rules in detail.

Where to base yourself

Wells-next-the-Sea: the best all-round dog base – beach, harbour, pinewoods and pubs, all walkable.

Burnham Market and the Burnhams: smarter villages inland from Brancaster with excellent dog-friendly pubs.

Holt: a handsome Georgian town within easy reach of the whole north coast.

The Broads (Horning, Wroxham): a different trip – riverside walks and dog-friendly day-boat hire, which most dogs treat as the best invention since the tennis ball.

Where to stay: dog-friendly cottages in Norfolk

North Norfolk cottages book up absurdly early for summer – the flint-and-brick ones near the quay at Wells go first. Usual criteria apply: enclosed garden, walks from the door. Bonus points for an outdoor tap or shower, because Holkham sand travels.

Walks and days out

Holkham circuit: beach out, pinewoods back – shade, sand and shelter whatever the weather’s doing.

Norfolk Coast Path: links most of the good beaches and saltmarsh villages – the Burnham Overy Staithe to Holkham stretch is a beauty.

Blickling Estate: National Trust parkland with generous off-lead areas away from livestock.

Thetford Forest: sheltered off-lead pine trails for windy days – the coast can blow hard in winter.

Practical tips

  • Seal season: grey seals pup on the Horsey and Winterton dunes roughly November to January – sections close, and dogs must be kept well away and on leads. A curious dog and a mother seal is a bad combination for both.
  • Saltmarsh tides flood the creeks fast – on marsh paths, know your tide times
  • Ground-nesting birds: parts of Holkham beach rope off for nesting terns and plovers in spring and summer – the signage is clear, respect it
  • Adders live in the dunes – keep dogs close in marram grass in warm weather
